What SoFi announced

SoFi is entering the small business lending market for the first time. The new product targets small business owners who are already SoFi members and need capital for hiring, equipment, or inventory.

What they’re advertising:

  • Loan amounts: $2,500 to $250,000
  • Fixed interest rate (amount not disclosed)
  • No application fee, no origination fee, no prepayment penalty
  • Funding within 24 hours of approval

SoFi CEO Anthony Noto called it “expanding our ability to serve members in more of the moments that matter.”

The 3 things SoFi isn’t telling you

⚠ Read Before You Apply Three important gaps in SoFi’s announcement that every business owner should know.

1. You must already be a SoFi member

This product is only available to existing SoFi customers. If you don’t already bank, borrow, or invest through SoFi, you can’t apply. That immediately eliminates the majority of small business owners searching for this product right now.

2. The APR is completely undisclosed

SoFi announced “fixed-rate loans” but published zero rate information at launch. No APR range, no floor, no ceiling. That’s a significant omission. An SBA 7(a) loan runs 10–13% APR. Bank-backed working capital runs 18–35%. Online alternative lenders run 25–60%. Until SoFi publishes their rate range — or you get a live quote — you have no idea if this is competitive or expensive.

3. Credit and revenue requirements are a black box

SoFi’s press release says they’ll evaluate “business and personal creditworthiness” but names no minimum credit score and no minimum revenue requirement. Fintech lenders with clean marketing often have tighter underwriting than they advertise. If you have less than 12 months in business or a credit score below 660, you may get declined with no explanation.

What to do instead

If you’re not already a SoFi customer, this product simply isn’t available to you. And even if you are, one lender quote is never enough — rates and approval odds vary significantly across lenders for the same borrower profile.

The smarter move is to check your options across multiple lenders at once, so you can compare real APRs side by side before committing to anything.

SoFi’s own survey found that nearly 1 in 3 small business owners turns to personal credit cards when they can’t access business financing — often because they only checked one lender and got rejected.

The bottom line

SoFi’s entry into small business lending is real news — a major consumer finance brand now competes in this space. But the membership wall, the hidden APR, and the opaque eligibility criteria mean most business owners searching for this product will end up disappointed or overpaying. Compare before you commit.
